Monmouthshire twin sack recycling gets off to a poor start

5.57.10pm GMT Sat 2nd Jan 2010

Despite last ditch attempts by Liberal Democrat councillors, Tory controlled Monmouthshire Council decided to proceed with the new "twin sack" system. Experts have described it as more expensive and less effective.

The Liberal Democrats are demanding that clear guidelines are distributed to homes in South Monmouthshire to prevent the widespread confusion that occurred in other areas where the sacks are already used.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson for Severnside, Ed Townsend said: "Leaflets tell people to place paper in one sack, whilst the instructions on the sacks say exactly the opposite. This has led to chaos and confusion - not a good start for an inferior system compared to the award winning black box."
